Can a graphic symbol help facilitate more compassion, empathy, and understanding in the world?
I drew this on a napkin quite accidentally a few years ago and have been thinking about it for some time. My grandparents survived the Holocaust in Europe, raised Jewish, I have an understanding of persecution.
It seemed like the Gay Cross had the potential to be a design for good, but since I am neither gay nor Christian I wanted to move slowly with it. I spent some time asking friends who were either one or the other or both, and only received positive feedback. So I decided to put up a simple site.
Given the current political climate of discrimination and hateful rhetoric coming from the White House and other extremists on the right, I thought this was a good time for the symbol to exist in the world. Happy pride month.
I hope that this small gesture can help all Christians embrace one another, no matter who they love. The Gay Cross is available freely for any non-commercial reproduction here: www.gaycross.com
